blink blink.. two months gone

Posted in blog, life in general, me-likey, sport, travel on July 28th, 2010 by s!

holy crap! we did an interview with the awesome one, and suddenly two months are gone, and yet no posts are forthcoming. shame, because lots happened in the two months and yet, nothing. in no particular order..

  • Spain finally held their nerve and won a World Cup.
  • BP finally put a fucking cap on the gusher. No one knows if they’ve finally gotten to the bottom of this.
  • The Outlaw Torn finally got hitched.
  • Summer finally came, with a heatwave and a vengeance. Who knew the Northeast could hit the 100s.
  • The Buffalo Sabres finally got to the playoffs again, and got KO’ed by a mediocre Boston outfit.

had one fantastic annual trip down to NOLA with family and friends in tow, and then was in DC for July 4th weekend which was awesome too. can i complain bitterly why there are no more Nando’s in the country apart from in DC?? it is good to see the South African giant make inroads here, and if they keep making their amazing chicken and sauces (and unlimited fro-yo!) they will definitely be an unmitigated hit!

have been on an astronomy trip since watching the Hubble 3D movie – am ruminating buying a space telescope after seeing how cool Vip’s is. the downside of that skywatching escapade was finding out that mosquitoes will not be dissuaded in the dark by any amount of bugspray and insect-proof sunscreen. if i do get a telescope i will limit myself to what i can see out of the living room window. shame none of the neighbors are ogle-able though. oh well.

finally got both mountain bikes fixed and roadworthy, so we’ve been cycling a lot in the evenings. unfortunately it’s not the best time to be out in the bushes since the bugs are coming in to roost, but if you cycle fast enough you get by. we’re really lucky that the Nashua River Rail Trail begins virtually a stone’s throw away from home. scenic views, peaceful surroundings, no car traffic, all make for idyllic biking.

the WP crossover

Posted in blog, life in general, travel, work on May 1st, 2010 by s!

ok so this blog has seen a shakeup in the last couple of months. dedicated and loyal readers are feeling betrayed and confused about the changes and lack of communication. you have no idea what’s going on, where we’re headed and there’s no one reasonable to talk to. “is this what it feels like to be a young republican under the current GOP leadership?” you wonder aloud..

the hitherto flamboyant author of this blog was recently interviewed in a frank, ‘state-of-the-union’ style pow-wow over a polystyrene foam cup of office cafeteria coffee, the stark reality of the dark steaming brew swirling in the morning chill..

you’re on WordPress now? what happened?
Blogger decided to be a bitch. the blog designer had been asking me to make the change from ages ago, so here i am

okay then. so what else is going on?
that’s a loaded question. there’s a lot going on, everywhere. look around you, this is well and truly the information age, where we are constantly getting bombarded by news and people and things and stuff

existentialism aside, why is the blog dormant?
i’m currently in a Hank Moody-like writer’s block phase, where life is moving on faster than i care to be riding, and i’m finding it harder to step off at the stops i want to

so why aren’t you blogging about it?
don’t you get it? i don’t want to talk about things. everyone’s talking. there’s background chatter filling up space like cosmic rays. i hanker for the days of old, when we knew less, and journalism had standards. now everyone knows everything and everyone has an opinion. you go on YouTube to watch a video and there’s a comment board filled with everbody chiming in. every news article nowadays has a comments section. bloody Facebook even has a like/dislike/unlike feature where my friends can react to the fact that i went to watch Alice in Chains. i mean, people can go on sites like Yuvutu and upload their own porn! it’s incestuous and self-serving and hypocritical, i get it

you sound like social media bothers you?
it does, quite violently. yet i’m here. voicing my opinion. i’m just as bad. what happened to not speaking unless you were spoken to.. or like in class, where you had to raise your hand to speak

changing tack, what are you into nowadays?
as always, i’m all over the place. i get bored easy, and distracted all the time. i just finished reading Louis L’Amour’s Sackett saga. i’m obsessing about Bartley´s Burgers and can’t wait to go back to Harvard Sq. i’ve been on a couple of trips with the fine folk at Urban Escapes Boston and am looking forward to a summer of fun coming up. an old buddy Vip was in town recently and we caught the Hubble movie on Imax and i haven’t been able to stop thinking about space, outer galaxies and the time-space continuum. went to The Tech in San Jose and was blown away by the outer space gallery. while there hanging out with another old bud A-Rod, we were able to help rescue a days-old seal pup and since then have been trying to raise awareness about the excellent work that the Marine Mammal Center folks are doing. now it appears the annual NOLA vacation is to be marred by this oil slick that’s threatening the shoreline

strange that you didn’t mention any music..
that’s true, really unlike me! i’m looking forward to a few concerts this summer. caught Alice in Chains again indoors a couple of months ago, and they’re touring with the Deftones and Mastodon soon. i’m loving the new album from Slash.. he’s pulled together some amazing talent across genres and this CD is a definite must-get – listen to this! the other most fantastic news is that Soundgarden have reunited, and not in a quick-cash-grab way either – Chris Cornell still sounds fantastic and the new Nudedragons avatar suits them pretty well

is this going to be a good summer?
i think it’s going to be a fantastic summer. there’ll be lots of family and friends visiting and by Northeast standards we’re supposed to have a scorching few months, which is great because last summer was mostly rained out. and then there’s the World Cup.. i’m kinda excited about that, since it only happens once every four years. i say kinda because most of my favorite players have retired now and the current crop of Ronaldos and Rooneys really bug me. i won’t be able to watch too many games since i’ll be at work, but i might look at changing my hours around for that period

who’s going to win American Idol 9?
are you fucking kidding me?!

i see you don’t like reality TV?
you really don’t know me do you? human beings as a species have allowed ourselves to be intellectually castrated by TV.. and reality shows are the epitome of this vicarious living-through-others’ lives

okay then. how about work? how’s the bottling business?
work is what it is.. work. it could be more fun and more relaxed but then i’d never want to leave to go home at the end of the day. the economy slayed us last year, but things have been picking up lately. we just passed a couple of major audits that ensured some solid business for the next year. news coming down the pipeline is that we’re aiming at ISO certification next, which is a totally different bear altogether

would you like to do a followup interview soon?
fuck that. everything i do nowadays is follow up. i am seriously sick and tired of being followed up on, and having to continue the shit-rolling-downhill chain by following up on people i supervise as well. i hate having to micromanage, but at the same time i do realize that human beings are inherently lazy bastards and will slack off given the chance. i’m no better some times. it’s lose-lose, but you have to do what you have to do

what’s with all the cussing?
alright, get the fuck out of my office..

so there you have it, the awesome one is hale, hearty and simmering mad it appears. we await further posts with trepidation.

say more, do more

if you knock long enough, and hard enough.. you will be heard
if you keep saying it, and living it.. your example will be followed

Blog Action Day 2008 was a success as far as raising awareness, bringing up issues and giving voice to the voiceless.. see for yourself how many people came together to blog about poverty.

however, this is just the first step. again i ask every one of you, what have you done lately for anyone else?

Blog Action Day 2008 – Poverty

Posted in arbit stuff, blog, life in general on October 15th, 2008 by s!

Today, on Blog Action Day, thousands of people worldwide have decided that we are going to unite to discuss a single issue – poverty.

In this world of “what have you done for me lately”, what have you done for any one else lately? I’m not talking just poverty of the economic kind here, but emotional and moral poverty as well. Do we stop to care any more? What’s our collective issue? No time, no money?

In case you’re wondering.. what can you do, as an individual? We’re told that poverty can be eliminated within our lifetimes, but even so, most of us feel stuck when it comes to taking action. There are in fact a range of things that anyone can do. (Info retrieved from Blog Action Day 2008)

What is Advocacy?
Advocacy is speaking up. Before change can happen, decision-makers need to know that their customers, community and constituents want change. Advocacy is letting them know.

Consumer Advocacy
Many businesses are in a position to make positive changes, by letting them know that customers want those changes, we empower them to do so. Some examples of consumer advocacy are:

  • Investing in “Ethical” funds that balance social responsibility with financial return – showing businesses that social responsibility is profitable
  • Letting your local coffee shop know that you would buy Fairtrade coffee if they stocked it
  • Buying clothing from a company that doesn’t make use of sweatshops, so that business sees the profit in being ethical.

Political Advocacy
Politicians are elected to serve the people, so it makes sense that if they have a clear mandate that their constituents are all in favour of something, they will be empowered to chase those goals. Political advocacy is about letting them know, and creating that mandate. Examples of political advocacy are:

  • Writing a letter to your local government representative – yes they actually read those letters!
  • Visiting your local representative to discuss issues relating to poverty – a little more daunting
  • Signing petitions to be delivered to government officials

Community Advocacy
By creating community awareness we broaden the support base for pro-poor action to take place and create a general environment conducive to change. There are many projects that anyone can easily join which are designed for exactly this purpose. A great example is the Stand Up Against Poverty project that falls just two days after Blog Action Day (October 17-19). Participants simply stand up, sometimes alone, most often in groups, to send a message to governments that people demand anti-poverty targets be met. Last year 43 million people participated, this year no doubt will be even larger.

By organising a Stand Up group in a local school, church or other organisation, you introduce other members of the community to the cause and issues and inform and educate them so they themselves become advocates in their own right.

There are a variety of ways that we can use our professional skills in the fight against poverty, that simply require thinking out of the box. Here are some examples:

  • Volunteering time with charitable organisations to provide specialist, professional skills
  • Getting your business or workplace to engage in pro-poor research. For example industries like agriculture and health are particularly important to developing economies. However even industries like finance and computers can yield innovations like microloans and the 1 Laptop per Child project, that can be of tremendous benefit to the poor.
  • Doing business in areas that are both profitable and beneficial to the needy. Bill Gates calls this “Creative Capitalism”, that is using the creative spark of entrepreneurship to bring the benefits of capitalism to the disadvantaged.

Giving is the simplest of all actions that can be taken. There are many, many charities that do great work and benefit from our contributions. Recently giving has also grown to encompass microfinancing – small loans given to entrepreneurs in developing areas to help them life themselves and their communities out of poverty. Participants in Blog Action Day 2008 are encouraged to donate their day’s earnings to either the Global Fund or Kiva Microloans. You can find out more about both these organisations here.

Information is the platform for better decision making, but all too often we don’t know much about what impact our daily actions have. Informing yourself and informing those around you, enables you to make better choices in daily life.

For more information on what you can do to raise awareness and make a difference, today and every day going forward, go on to Blog Action Day 2008 and let’s do something!

Reports of this blog’s demise have been greatly exaggerated“. For the literary puritans out there, kindly forgive the bastardization of Mark Twain’s words..

A couple of weeks ago this blog’s domain address came up for renewal again. With that came a lot of brow beating and gnashing of teeth.. to renew or not.. to continue or not. Funnily enough, i’ve always been a man of principle – but wait, i define principle differently. To me, a man of principle is one who does what he decides is best for him, at the time and place he is in, a soldier of fortune if you will. I have never tried to live by some sort of moral code or whatever – circumstances change everything, as do people’s goals and ambitions, all i try to do is get around achieving my own without hurting anyone else’s around me.

Anyways, since this piece is not about discussing my mental make-up.. we’ll go back to the life of this blog. I don’t write here regularly any more. It’s not all because i’ve been too busy. A combination of doing too much else and a general lack of inertia have contributed. I still have a lot to say, just am not sure how to put some of my points across. Unfortunately Blogger does not support audio blogging like it once did, i’ve always found it easier to explain myself vocally.

Having made the commitment though to keep the domain registered, it it upon me now to live up to my word and keep the pages populated..

4 years and 776 posts..

missed this blog’s fourth anniversary a couple of weeks ago.. much has changed, and yet not much has changed. good times still abound, while growing up has happened alongside. i still don’t believe i wake up and go to work six days a week, considering the rockstar lifestyle we led back in college. oh well, life goes on. this blog goes on too.

push my buttons?

Posted in blog on March 9th, 2008 by s!

Blog buttons are a fascinating thing to play with, especially if you have lots of time and a handy website for a button maker. If you scroll down to my sidebar links, you’ll see some I made. However, these nifty little buttons can be made to say anything you want. Yes, anything. Look at these -

(These buttons originally made by
Jeremy Zawodny)

I can’t claim ownership of these buttons, however awesome they are! Here are a couple of links for making buttons – some of them allow you to make buttons with graphics while the others are plain-text versions: McKnight, Zappa, Kalsey.. enjoy!

Blog Action Day

Posted in arbit stuff, blog on October 17th, 2007 by s!

damn, i missed this.. blog action day was on October 15th. i like their slogan -

Blog Action Day!- “What would happen if every blog published posts discussing the same issue, on the same day?

One issue. One day. Thousands of voices. The issue is the environment. The date is October 15.”

check out their blog if you want to know what it was all about.. the issue at hand was the environment – y’all already know how i feel about this topic, and what each one of us can do to make a contribution

oh yeah, i’m really glad Gore & the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel won the Nobel Peace Prize. it’s recognition for their efforts, not at trying to tell anyone what to do, but just trying to get us all to pay a little more attention to the environment and what we are doing to it.. it’s like a jug of water sitting on the table, and we’re looking at it, but no one’s reaching forward and picking it up… get up, do something dammit!
